Our history
1987
The beginning of The Leger Clinic
Dr Doug Savage founded the clinic in 1987, focusing initially on helping men with erectile dysfunction. As word spread about his expertise, Doug’s reputation grew, and his clinic began making waves in sexual health.
1990
Expanding services for men and women
Not long after starting the clinic, Doug approached two local health authorities — Doncaster and Bassetlaw — to offer sexual health services to both men and women. He proudly held these NHS contracts until he retired from the NHS in 2018.
1998
Dr Doug Savage's eureka moment in TRT
While attending the European Society of Sexual Medicine (ESSM) meeting in London, Doug had a breakthrough moment. Hearing from a New York professor, he learned that many men weren’t responding to Viagra because of low testosterone — something that was considered normal at the time. This discovery changed everything, leading Doug to pioneer testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) at The Leger Clinic. He knew his patients needed more than just standard care; they needed tailored TRT solutions.
2004
Adding psychosexual therapy
Recognising the need for a holistic approach to sexual health, renowned psychosexual therapist Trudy Hannington joined the clinic. Trudy’s expertise allows us to offer a combination of therapies, helping patients tackle sexual dysfunction on all fronts.
2011
National recognition
In 2011, Doug was invited by NHS Diabetes to join a national panel to develop guidelines on diabetes and erectile dysfunction. He continued his influential work the following year, drawing up a fact sheet on hypogonadism and diabetes, highlighting the under-diagnosed and under-treated condition. Doug became well-known for speaking at conferences across Europe and America, asking questions that pushed the boundaries of medical understanding.
2018
Growing the clinic
After 30 years of holding NHS contracts, Doug retired from the NHS, allowing him to fully focus on expanding the clinic’s private services. His expertise and passion for sexual health, testosterone replacement, and patient care meant more patients than ever were seeking treatment.
2020
Adapting to a changing world
Like many medical practices, Leger Clinic adapted rapidly during the Covid pandemic. What started as face-to-face consultations in Doncaster evolved into online consultations, making it easier for patients across the UK to access expert care. This new approach led to exponential growth, catapulting the clinic to being one of the best medically led and affordably priced clinics in the country.
2021
The team expands
As patient demand grew, so did the team. Doug welcomed a clinic manager to oversee day-to-day operations, and shortly after, another doctor joined the ranks. Today, the team includes three specialist doctors in men’s health and testosterone deficiency, three Advanced Nurse Practitioners, a senior prescribing nurse, and a dedicated support staff. Together, we’ve grown to meet the needs of our expanding patient base.
2022
Awarded CQC outstanding
A proud moment in our history came in March 2022, when Leger Clinic was awarded the highest accolade from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) – an Outstanding rating. This recognition affirms our commitment to patient care, safety, and excellence in sexual health and hormone treatments.
2024
Leger joins forces with Medichecks
The Leger Clinic becomes simply Leger and joins UK-based blood testing experts Medichecks. Now, with Medichecks’ testing power and Leger’s hormone expertise, we’re making it easier than ever for people to take control of their hormone health and get back to feeling their best.
